The unofficial Ottawa Rapids blog

Protecting the Lynx legacy

The more things change…. UPDATED

Posted by Carl on April 25, 2008

Well, that didn’t take long did it?  You’ll note that the blog has returned to it’s original “Lynx Red” format - hopefully the Raps didn’t order the bilingual blue unis yet.  The team’s scheduled a press conference for Monday “regarding Ottawa’s new independent baseball team, the Ottawa Rapidz”.  The speculation, as noted in the Ottawa Business Journal yesterday, is that the team will announce the sale of the Rapids to Zip.ca.

As always, more to come.

*** UPDATE ***

Neate posts up with his thoughts.

If this is the new design (the unis/log, not your site) it’s a huuuuge step down from the old blue Rapids design. Loved the old design and was looking forward to buying a t-shirt/hat when the season started. Don’t think I’ll be doing that now. Maybe they ordered some merchandise already that they can sell at a discount :)

Can’t say that I like the change to Rapid’z’ either, although I understand the marketing reasons behind both that and the color change.

All that said, I have no problem with the sale to Zip. I’ve been a happy customer of theirs for a year and a bit now. Hope they do a good job with the Rapids (I’m sticking with s until it’s official)

  2. Pimor Says:

why the change of name and logo? it was great before, it seems less exciting this way but whatever, we’ll support the team

  3. André Says:

Where does this logo come from?

  4. André Says:

I definitely prefer the original logo. By a long shot. I hope it’s not serious and that it’s a joke from this fine blogger. Above all, I pray that they will not actually spell the name of the team as “Rapidz” (with a Z) on the uniforms. It’s really not a subtle product placement (presuming that the Z is for Zip.ca), and it sure doesn’t sound and look very credible to baseball fans. Would people in NYC allow the Yankees to be renamed the Yankeez?

Then there’s the fact that the other logo is absolutly fine and above all there’s the fact that there already was a press conference a few weeks ago unveilling them. I have nothing against a DVD rental company owning the club, it’s all fine, but leave it at that. After all, when Eugene Melnick bought the Sens, he didn’t change the logo or rebaptized the team the Ottawa BioVails!

Then again, my guess is that the logo thing is a prank. It has to be because it sucks! I really doubt that Miles Wolff would allow that to happen, unless he’s really desperate to sell the team (which I doubt).

  5. Carl Says:

The logo was attached to the press release.

  6. Ian Says:

I’ll still be there opening day, but the renaming is lame. I cringed when I first read it, and I’ve cringed on every re-read.

That being said, having a team with a lame, high-tech sounding name and spelling is better than having none at all. I keep telling myself that between cringes.

  7. Pierre Says:

When I saw this post, the logo in particualr, I couldn’t believe it. Still don’t.

The logo may have been attached to the press release, but I doubt it’s official. At least, I hope not. Can’t see it.

  8. FDR_Cubs Says:

    Strike One!

    (Not a good thing)

  9. Pierre Says:

Rapidz eh! What’s next Mardi Gras Weekends? Flaming R logo, or maybe they’ll rename them the Steelbacks?
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

  10. Antoine Says:

Could that be for a 3rd uniform? Lots of them in Can-Am.

  11. Bryan Says:

I think you guys have to be more open minded there is nothing wrong with good corporate assocition take for example both NASCAR and EPL two sports that rely heavily on Corporate Sponsorship. Go RAPIDZ GO!

  12. Dave Says:

Terrible. Terrible logo. Looks like house league uniforms from 1978. I HATE how every team ever to play in Canada just has to add a maple leaf. The blue logo with the water looked really professional, I hope this is a joke. The blue also tied in with the stadium. The “Z” is just kind of dumb, and an idea that’s out of vogue, but come on, really? I’ll be there, I love baseball, but how do you go from a professionally designed, good looking logo to this? I looked forward to outfitting the family in the “splashy” blue garb, but honestly, not this crap.

  13. Tao of Stieb Says:

Wow. That’s just about the most stupid thing we’ve ever seen in our life.

    Awful. Pathetic.

Is it wrong to call this “bush league”?

  14. jayme Says:

    Tao
I am not sure how old you are.But there has been much worse thing in sports then this.

  15. Paul Says:

    Rapidz? How stupidz!!!

New name, logo have killed a lot of my enthusiazm for this new venture.

How long did it take to think up thiz logo?

    Bad,bad idea.

  16. Bob Says:

I really liked the original logo and team colours. Adding the “z” to the end of the name really cheeses it up as well. Sounds like some urban slang pitch circa the late 1990’s. I agree, definitely a step back as far as marketing goes. Classy to cheesy and the season hasn’t even begun.

  17. FDR_Cubs Says:

OK, now I am over the shock.

Come to think of it, a logo is appreciated by it’s history and accomplishments. Take the Montreal Canadiens’ logo… It is nothing more than a red toilette seat with a big white “H” in the middle. But what a history! Habs’ fans wear it with pride.

Spelling mistakes? How about the Toronto Maple Leafs (shouldn’t the correct spelling be Leaves?) or the Boston red Sox (shouldn’t it be socks?). One thing for sure, searching the web for “Rapidz” will make it alot easier to get news about the team than searching for Rapids or Rapides where you get thousands of irrelevant articles.

  18. Jayme Reid Says:

If some of you are not going to support this team because of the name and logo. Then to be honest your not fans at all.

  19. Peter Says:

Jayme, I didn’t hear anybody say they are not supporting the team, I hear passionate fans not bandwagon jumpers. The logo stinks and the name stinks and I have been cringing at the ‘z’ everytime I see it too but I will support this team.

  20. King Says:

Jayme I agree, short and sweet and right to the point. You can have some fun with the Z .Can I have a Z burger cooked by a Z chef while I watch one of the new flat screen tv’s ? Go Z ’s Go

  21. Paul Says:

    To Jayme,

If the baseball is good, we’ll go, but I won’t be buying any T-shirts.

Marketing 101 lesson: design a logo the fans can identify with.

If I want an “OTTAWA” T-shirt I’ll just go downtown and purchase a
generic OTTAWA T-shirt at a local hotel along with a quart of maple
    syrup and a stuffed Mountie.
