Here’s what I sent to the club (quick, get over to the team website, you
can still see the good logo there…..)
Sorry to bother, I realize you may be getting pounded with a lot of these
right now, but I’ve gotta say, I really hope that new name and logo is a
joke. The “blue splash” looks very professional and well done, I looked
forward to outfitting my family of 5 in anything you could sell us. The
red logo being circulated with the “Z” and the maple leaf looks like my
house league uniform from 1978! Oh, we’ll be there at the park, and of
course a new owner can do what he wants, but surely something better
is possible, even with the silly misspelling, the overused and cliche
maple leaf and colour red, none of which have anything to do with water.
Too bad, you’ve turned a home run into a real swing-and-a-miss. See
you opening day, I’ll be the guy wearing the Mariners or Lynx gear….
PS- Please forward along to whoever killed that great blue logo….
>>>>
I think they’re making a big mistake here, they had a very nice brand
started, I can see people around town wanting to wear the blue stuff,
this just doesn’t LOOK like a pro ball club.

As I write this, the score is 16-2 for the original logo. I think we all agree that the original is more professional and just plain looks better.
I still don’t think it is meant to be a new logo. Some sort of error by whoever made the press release. Also, think about it. The Rapids put effort and money coming up with a name and the logo. A bilingual name which now doesn’t work with that Z, going against what Miles Wolff built over the last few months. Now, it’s going to be scrapped in a matter of days just because one of the owners also owns Zip? It just doesn’t make sense to me.
I’m still going to the games if I’m wrong. But RapidZ? Come on.
By the way, I’m Pierre L now, the original Pierre who has posted here for months. I see someone else using Pierre as their name.

I went with the old mostly because I liked the widely perceived original hat design. Though I don’t hate the new lettering as much as the others, I hate the Z. I hate singular baseball names and anything mispelled on purpose. I think the Rapids opponent, the Brockton Rox is a stupid name even if they are in Massachusetts attempting to capitalize on Sox synergy.

As I mentioned when the news of the (probable) ownership change came out, this kind of thing scares me. The ‘red’ logo is simply amateurish when it is compared to the ‘waves’ logo. If this is the sort of ‘improvement’ that the (probable) new owners are bringing to the table, then I don’t see good things in the future.
I’ll fire off an email to the team as well.

Hi guys this is my first post. I am very excited that the Rapids are comming to town. I see the logo with theZ but but I think everyone has put the cart in front of the horse. The deal has not yet been announced and all I hear is complaints about a logo that has not even happened yet, lets wait for the news to-day before we have polls and start cutting up the new owners before they have a chance. One more thing I think if the radio is in french they should do up-dates in english. If you use use the old logo which one goes on the jersey Rapids or Rapides or both?
April 28, 2008 at 11:21 am
The “Rapids” name and blue Logo was certainly not my choice & I would have preferred something else.
However, they are much better than that Red thingy, wherever it came from. Having said that I also have to say this, why should we worry about having a bilingual name with the two spellings - politics should be kept out of this.
Its time for the circus to end - this is beginning to look rather bush, the first game is 3 weeks away & we are still frigging around with the name, logo & colors, …..come on.
Whatever name & colour is used, I will be there opening day, wearing my Washington Nationals ball cap by the way.

No, it’s a done deal, the new site is already online http://www.ottawarapidz.com.

If you check out the ‘new, improved’ team website, they list Rick Anderson as CEO and Miles Wolff as President. It’s funny that they haven’t changed all the spellings of Rapids to have a ‘z’ (yet), but it looks like a done deal.
Since they give us Rick Anderson’s email address, I’ll fire off an email to him.

it was a shock to see the new logo after falling in love with the first logo
but today, looking at it, it ain’t that bad
for the name “Rapidz”, to me it’s bilingual enough, it is a mistake in french and in english, no issue there
(for the name Rapids and Rapides, the original plan was to play one day with a jersey with the french version and the other day with the english version, which was an original solution but now, with the new name, we forget about it)
anyway, we must give the benefit of the doubt to the new owners, anyway, besides a couple of baseball nuts, I don’t think the city was aware of the first logo so it was still time to change it
with local owners, if they are serious, our chances of having a long story with the new team are better, remember, it came close to having no more baseball
April 28, 2008 at 12:59 pm
You know what is really sad about this: They Zip team has gone and done a quick and dirty “find and replace” on the website, so now there are gems like this:
“Mr. Wolff also proudly revealed the new blue and silver Rapidz logo, which features a bilingual version of the team name (Ottawa Rapidz d’Ottawa) above a stylized baseball.”
This is just depressing. “Rapids” or “Rapides” are good names. “Rapidz” sounds like a Giant Tiger brand of $7.99 skater shoes.
And yeah, it is just a name, but the point is that it demonstrates a certain disregard for the fans and a pronounced self-interest on the part of the owners. Not that there is anything wrong with self interested ownership necessarily, but we just don’t feel like dropping the money on season’s tickets now that we know that they’re planning to use the team as a marketing vehicle for their antiquated DVD rental business.
Blerg.

I can’t connect to the site, says DNS not responding (but I can get to every other site…

Lol! I couldn’t have said it better.

I’m not a fan of what appears to be the new logo. Why not change the existing logo and replace the final ’s’ with ‘z’? I’m not a fan of the red but I am a Zip member and I happen to think they’re great! Still prefer the original logo though.

As I come here to see if there’s any news, I’m surprised to see so many new comments today.
First, if the new Z website was up, it’s not right now, just a few hours after André put up the link. By the way, I checked and that domain name was registered by Momentous two weeks ago.
So I guess that makes it official although I have yet to see this new site and no mention on the old one or the Can-Am league site.

I wonder how this will affect all those who submitted names for the team that were suppose to get a free game during the season…
Any ideas?

After sober second thought & reading the articles in todays two dailies, I have to eat some of my previous words & say that I am pleased with the changes.
I think it is especially important that we now have local owners. I know nothing of the company nor its executives but I like what I read in Tuesdays papers. The new Logo depticted in the news is much nicer than the scripted “Ottawa Rapidz” shown on this blog. The elimination of the two names: “Rapids & Rapides” is another excellent change.
The bottom line is when you buy something for $750,000 it gives you the right to make changes. I wish the new owners well & hope all local baseball fans support this team by showing up at the ball park.
April 29, 2008 at 6:56 pm
also this was not viable to have 2 teams in the same league (Quebec city and Ottawa) owned by the same person (Miles Wolff)
was even the name Rapides chosen at first for this event since one of the new owner, Rick Anderson is president of “Rapidz Sports and Entertainment”? but since they weren’t sure the deal would go through, was it planned so they have chosen an interim name close enough to do the transition when the deal would be done?
anyway, the new owners have interesting ideas:
http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Baseball/2008/04/29/5415226-sun.html
not to do the move of selling the team in this circumstances would have a sign of Bush Leagues but now, on the contrary, we have dedicated owners
I still regret the blue logo but I supported the red Lynx uniform for so long, I can still live with something close to it
