What’s in a name?

Posted by Carl on April 27, 2008

Wait.  I think I’ve used that title before.

I’m genuinely surprised at the reaction to the name change and what it tells me is that in their brief existence, the Rapids have developed some brand loyalty.  In short, it appears that people have become attached to the name and the original blue logo.  All of this reaction comes on a weekend, when traditionally the blog traffic drops to a trickle, so things may even out in the morning - or the trend may continue.  Neate’s done the heavy lifting as usual and has posted a virtual symposium of the comments left on the blogs, email and through Facebook contacts.

Unfortunately, yours truly will not be able to attend tomorrow’s press conference so the only coverage looks to be through the MSM (unless Neate or Pete Toms can make it).

Don’t see why you are surprised. Changes like this, if in fact official, & coming at a time & in manner like this smells of bush league. Do we have new owners or not? Guess we will find out at the Press Conference.

This reminds me of a comment made by a Can-Am umpire when a player was called out last year . The player was screaming at the ump” what a bush league call” , the ump said where do you think you are this is the not the majors get use to it because you are playing in the bush leagues.

Well now we know the answer re: logos; “None of the above” - see the Ottawa Citizen, 29 April - a more classic look; sure the “z” might not be the greatest, but in a region where “bilingual” seems to be a paramount concern to living and breathing, we couldn’t have gone with the English only “s”, nor would it have been practical to try to have two verisons of each - ie, situations such as “do we wear the french “home” shirt tonight, or the english one?”

Bottom line - ownership matters; local ownership matters more. That’s what we have, and since I couldn’t afford to own the team myself, then I guess I have to put up with things I’m not particularly fond of (I mean, Rapids wasn’t my choice for a name, but I got over it!).

Just lets hope people don’t have hissy fits and stay away because they don’t like the changes; otherwise it might not matter when the Coventry Road Chamber Music Hall opens up (get my point?).

    Let’s support the team…
